‘Heartbreak 2020’ by Kamakshi Khanna: an Introspective Indie-Pop EP That Contemplates Love

‘Heartbreak 2020’ by Kamakshi Khanna is a 4-track indie-pop EP that alternates between synth-heavy tracks with RnB and Indie leanings and introspective, acoustic ballads. It’s a concise body of work that tells the story of someone who’s failed through love in the past but still holds out for “the one” anyway.

‘Heartbreak 2020’: Track-by-Track

‘Blew It!’ and ‘Love Is Not A Fucking Game’

The first track on ‘Heartbreak 2020’, ‘Blew It!’ sets an almost breezy tone on the on-set. It does this with its wavy ynths and fast-paced percussion, allowing the listener to ease into the song’s (and the EP’s) light, soulful sound. The song looks at how things are in a specific relationship and yearns to go back and make a “better” first impression.

This is evident in the lines: “…if I met you again for the first time,…I would make a better first impression than that…”. Maybe things wouldn’t be this way if things had gone differently.

‘Love Is Not A Fucking Game’ is a scathing acoustic track that reflects on being treated badly in love. The singer’s anger is clear throughout as she recognises that her feelings are being toyed with. “…You gave me your love and trust when you wanted it…you never really wanted it…”. “…Who cares what I wanted…”.

These feelings are emphasised by trinkling piano accents and a light percussion at key points.

The song’s refrain clearly captures all of the singer’s heartache:

“…Love is not a fucking game for me,

Not an escape for me…

It’s not supposed to leave you so empty…so weak…”

The song ends on a heaving resolve, where the singer finally proclaims:

“…No, I don’t want to play your games…”.

‘Tourist’ and ‘Heartbreak 2020’

The third track on the album, ‘Tourist’, is another acoustic track that reminisces on a love that left it behind. “…You were a tourist in my life…”. Its lyrics spill with heartache and clever travel metaphors that highlight the fleeting nature of the relationship that passed the singer by.

This is evident in lines like, “…You left some of your baggage…” and “…I wish you checked-in sometimes…”.

It reflects on how this connection helped the singer see her mundane in a new way. “…You helped me see my own city in a new light…”.

The song seems to build to something explosive and powerful in its verses before it swings into a refrain that is slow and almost contemplative. This explosive build to a mesmerising crescendo gives ‘Tourist’ a unique touch that feels indicative of its introspectiveness.

The final track on the album is its title track, ‘Heartbreak 2020’. The song bring’s back the synths and percussion from ‘Blew It!’ to give it a fitting send-off. It’s lyrics introspect on the singer’s propensity for love and why she puts herself in vulnerable situations that hurt her.

She resolves that “…I don’t want to grow alone…”. She does this while also admitting that it isn’t easy to hold out for the one. But ultimately makes peace with the fact that this is what she wants.

Though tinged with the heartache and betrayal from past romantic exploits, ‘Heartbreak 2020’ by Kamakshi Khanna reflects on it all before resolving on a hopeful note. Its soundscape alternates between synth-heavy indie pop and acoustic, RnB influenced tracks that make for a fun listen.
