Salsola – Heartbreaker | Groovy

Teeside, Middlesbrough-based band Salsola are known for their eclectic feel-good tracks that are a breath of fresh air in ‘indie’ genre. They have been actively performing and putting out original music since 2017 and recently came out with their sixth single called “Heartbreaker”. The four-piece Salsola create guitar-centric, neo soul-inspired tracks that are intricately composed and are really groovy. On their latest release, they seem to have found their ‘sound’ that showcases their organic and soulful performance beautfully.

“Heartbreaker” is introduced with an upbeat hi-hat rhythm and a deep bassline that supports a driving electric guitar groove. “Here at the end / Nobody else / What little lie to give? / Getting used to this”– Salsola sets the premise of heartbreak through their conversational and relatable lyrics. A somewhat cranky vocal style sets the mood, and it is quite enjoyable to listen to over the instrumental. Right from the start, you feel the magic of the silences in the individual instrumental parts; Salsola showcases their engaging songwriting and production style excellently here!

As the track progresses, we can hear the raw-ness in each and every element of the track. The band uses super-clean tones and classic indie-pop cadences that are very pleasing to listen to. With a funky guitar solo, a lively drum section and a solid bridge, “Heartbreaker” sure seems to have it all! This track lasts 4 minutes and is incredibly engaging. Its catchy choruses and fantastic guitars all tie up wonderfully and showcase Salsola’s new sound really well on this one.
