Captain Mantis Blends Retro Rock with Modern Vision in “Vice Market”

Captain Mantis brings together the raw energy of garage rock with artful composition, creating something that feels both vintage and completely fresh. Since bursting onto the Mexican indie scene in early 2020 with their double A-side “The Game/Which One of Us,” they’ve been turning heads in Mexico’s underground music circles. The band features Pato Sepúlveda shredding on guitar, Charly Lowry driving the rhythm on drums, Checo Ruizesparza delivering powerful vocals, and Ignacio Alvarez holding down the low end on bass. Together, they create music that’s both nostalgic and forward-looking.

Captain Mantis seems to be crafting some interesting sonic territory with “Vice Market.” It starts with “Moonshine Alley” shows their ability to blend retro elements with modern rock sensibilities. The way they’ve structured the song – starting with those cool beats and building to that cinematic chorus in the second half – shows good instincts for dynamic arrangement. The combination of emotive vocals with groovy instrumentation creates this engaging push-pull that keeps listeners invested.

“Simon Frost” takes a different approach, going for more layered textures and emotional depth while maintaining the band’s energetic core. It’s interesting how they’ve managed to create something that feels both deeper and equally dynamic – that’s not an easy balance to strike.

“Galatea” brings this wonderful shift in energy with those heart-warming acoustic riffs. It’s like they’ve created this perfect musical equivalent of a peaceful moment of clarity. The vocals really complement the gentler instrumentation here, creating this sense of floating through beautiful scenery. It’s the kind of track that gives listeners a moment to breathe and reflect.

“Vice Market” serves as this perfect closer, showing their ability to craft an epic journey within a single track. Starting with those mysterious sounds before launching into those 70s-influenced electric riffs shows great attention to atmosphere-building. The fact that they can take listeners through multiple variations while keeping it engaging throughout is impressive – that’s not easy to do with a longer track.

Looking at the EP as a whole now – from “Moonshine Alley” through “Simon Frost,” “Galatea,” and ending with “Vice Market” – there’s this really nice progression. They’ve managed to showcase different aspects of their sound while maintaining a cohesive identity throughout. The way they move from groovy rock to emotional depth, then to acoustic calm, before closing with that epic final track shows careful thought about the listening experience.
