Australian comedy rock duo Tenacious D are apparently going on a hiatus. This follows an online backlash on a controversial joke about former U.S. President Donald Trump’s attempted assassination.
Last Sunday, July 14th, during their show at the ICC Sydney theatre, a few hours after the Pennsylvania shooting a “robot” presented Kyle Gass a cake, to celebrate his 64th birthday. When asked to make a wish before blowing the candles, Kyle said, “Don’t miss Trump next time.” The video went viral, leading to serious consequences.
Australian senator Ralph Babet, leader of the United Australia Party demanded the duo to be deported from Australia. He insisted Australia’s immigration minister to revoke their visas.
Jack Black took to Instagram to announce that the rest of the Tenacious D tour has been cancelled and “all future creative plans are on hold”.
“I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form,” were Jack’s exact words on Instagram.

He furthermore stated, “After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.“
Kyle Gass has apologized on Instagram for his action. “The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake,” said Kyle.
He further added, “I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone. What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement. I profoundly apologise to those I’ve let down and truly regret any pain I’ve caused.”
