Padma Bhushan awardee & Renowned Folk Singer Sharda Sinha Succumbs to Cancer at 72

Sharda Sinha, one of the most popular folk singers in India and a Padma Bhushan awardee, breathed her last on 5th November 2024 at the age of 72 due to significant complications that arose out of cancer. Doctors diagnosed Ms. Sinha with multiple myeloma, a form of cancer that heavily impacts the bone marrow, in 2017.

The well-known singer sought treatment at AIIMS Delhi, where she has been undergoing treatment at the hospital’s Oncology department since October 25, 2024. She depended on ventilator support, and as per reports, she passed away due to refractory shock as a result of septicemia.

On account of her unfortunate demise, Ms. Sharda Sinha‘s son, Anshuman Sinha said in a post, “Your prayers and love will always be with mother. Chhathi Maiya has called her to her side, and she no longer remains amongst us in her physical form.”

Starting off her career by singing Maithili folk songs, Ms. Sinha has earned immense respect and wide recognition as one of Bihar’s most prominent music personalities. She has also sung in several other languages, such as Bhojpuri, Magahi, and Hindi.

Besides enjoying a successful career as a folk singer, she has lent her beautiful voice to songs in Bollywood movies like Maine Pyar Kiya, and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, and she is also the singer of the immensely popular track ‘Taar Bijli‘ from Anurag Kashyap’s film, Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 2.

Ms. Sharda Sinha‘s voice will be missed and remembered forever through her exceptionally beautiful songs dedicated to the Chhath festival. Until recently, the singer was a regular performer at several Chhath events. May her wonderful soul Rest in Peace!
