Almost three decades since his untimely passing, musician Jeff Buckley continues to captivate with his genre-defying music and a life that still intrigues listeners.
After a successful theatrical run and festival circuit, the highly anticipated documentary “It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley” on his life is set to make its streaming debut on HBO Max on December 4 as part of HBO’s acclaimed Music Box series.

The documentary premiered to widespread acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year in January. Following its festival success, Magnolia Pictures released the film theatrically on August 8. The film draws from previously unseen archival material and candid reflections from his mother Mary Guibert, former romantic partners including Rebecca Moore and Joan Wasser, and musicians who performed alongside him such as Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred. Through these perspectives, the documentary sheds light on an artist whose impact on contemporary music remains profound despite his short career.
“It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley” chronicles the brief but remarkable journey of the musician whose genre-defying approach left a mark on the 1990s before his life was tragically cut short in a drowning accident in the Memphis river.
Jeff Buckley first gained attention performing at a memorial concert honoring his father famed folk artist Tim Buckley. He soon developed a cult following within New York City’s East Village and Lower Manhattan alternative music scene. Emerging from these vibrant music circles, only completed studio album Grace blended alternative and art rock with folk, soul, and jazz, and has become a classic. Buckley’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah became particularly iconic cementing his place in music history. His breadth of style and influences ranged from Led Zeppelin to Nina Simone and even qawwali legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (whom he not only covered but also interviewed).
Directed by Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Amy Berg (known for Deliver Us from Evil), the film has been a passion project for years. Berg pursued the project persistently, eventually winning over Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, whose cooperation was crucial for access to the family archives.
It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley will air on HBO on Thursday, December 4 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT and will be available to stream on HBO Max the same day.
