Sky Ferreira makes her first comeback with ‘Leash’ since 2022

Sky Ferreira has ended her musical silence with the release of “Leash,” her first new song since 2022. The song, which she wrote specifically for A24’s upcoming film Babygirl, starring Nicole Kidman, deals with shame, entrapment, and resilience. Co-written by Ferreira and Jorge Elbrecht, “Leash” is an emotional centrepiece of the Babygirl Original Soundtrack.

Ferreira spoke recently with Keaton Bell for Vogue about her stormy history in music. She had been thwarted from putting out new music for ten years due to a fraught relationship with Capitol Records, which was once was her label. Ferreira will self-release another song in 2025.

Reflecting on why she contributed to Babygirl, Sky Ferreira said: “Her character is really self-destructive and destructive with other people’s lives, but she kinda has to go through this whole experience for the sake of growing as a person. I think that’s why I connected to the material so much, even though my circumstances are so different from the world of the film.”

Sky Ferreira’s strife with Capitol Records have been well-covered. Fans ran the “Free Sky Ferreira” campaign in 2022, which topped off with a Times Square digital billboard calling for the label to cease delaying her long-awaited sophomore album, Masochism

After the campaign, Ferreira was quietly taken off Capitol’s artist roster.

Since her 2013 debut album, Night Time, My Time, Sky Ferreira has only dropped two singles: “Downhill Lullaby” in 2019 and “Don’t Forget” in 2022. She recently stunned the public with a cover of Lady A’s “Need You Now” during Kevin Abstract’s Coachella set early this year.

With “Leash” being a triumphant return, many fans are hoping that it’s just the beginning of a new chapter for Sky Ferreira.
