Bengaluru’s Fallen Letters Make a Powerful Dark Rock and Metal Debut at Alterfate

On July 21, Bengaluru witnessed a fiery aesthetic mix of heavy, mellow, and dark rock music with the Alterfate show at Fandom. Alterfate featured Bengaluru alternative progressive rock/metal band Fallen Letters with their debut live performance playing songs from their latest debut EP ‘Forlorn Pages‘. They were supported by prog/alt rock band Screetus and progressive/psychedelic rock act The Radio Magazines from the city.

Progressive/psychedelic rock act The Radio Magazines kicked off the evening. Inspired by Porcupine Tree and Pink Floyd, they are on their way to forge a unique sound. The band which is working on their debut album, laid a stunning performance warming up the audience for the evening.

Alternative Prog rock band Screetus followed, bringing their signature mix of melancholic melodies and musical poignant storytelling. Their music created a heavy, hazy, progressive rock aura that enveloped the venue. The band’s set was especially significant as it marked the last gig with their guitarist Vamsi. Their cover of Linkin Park’s ‘One More Light’ was a touching tribute. The performance of their song ‘Slipstream‘ was a highlight from their set along with the dense ethereal mix which kept audiences enchanted and headbanging.

Opening with ‘For A While’, Fallen Letters immediately set a somber yet powerful tone. The atmosphere thickened as they moved into where chunky guitars mixed with an evocative mood that gripped the crowd. They paid homage to their influences with covers of ‘My Twin’ by Katatonia and ‘Hope Leaves’ by Opeth. The performance of their lead single ‘Remain A Memory‘ set the audience on fire as the chorus came in. I also was elated to finally witness ‘Relapse‘. Featuring verses that kept you on the edge with a beautiful cathartic release of a chorus, witnessing ‘Relapse’ live was an elating experience. But the best was yet to come with their heaviest song ‘Beneath the Opaque Veil’. Bassist Abhay Prakash joined the audience in a ritualized moshpit, closing the set on an unforgettable note.

Vocalist/guitarist Vishal Naidu kept audiences hooked going from soft vocals to screams, all the while managing guitar duties. Guitarist Aditya Ramesh was a surgically precise workhorse with his guitarwork ensuring the band was on top, coupled with the tight rhythm section of bassist Abhay Prakash and drummer Mukund Narasimhan.

Overall, Alterfate was an insane live experience, and hoping to look forward to more phenomenal shows featuring alternative and progressive rock bands with a heavy dark mellow edge.
