Northlane : Band Secrets, Gig Stories & Prospective Collab with Paramore, Limp Bizkit

Northlane’s Unfiltered Two Cents on Music, Mishaps, and Maybes

In a candid and lighthearted segment during our recent chat, Marcus Bridge, Josh Smith, and Nic Pettersen, members of the Australian metalcore band Northlane, sat down to share their thoughts on everything from comfort music to chaotic stage mishaps. Armed with notepads, they reflected on moments both personal and collective, offering fans a fun peek into their world beyond the stage.

When it comes to winding down, the band doesn’t always lean into metal. Marcus Bridge has been stuck on “Emptyhanded” by Bilmuri, a track from an album he describes as pure good vibes. Josh Smith has been looping Opeth‘s Deliverance, a dark, progressive record he finds oddly soothing, especially after catching them live at summer festivals. Nic Pettersen’s choice is practical and peaceful: “I Am,” the opening track from Kalandra‘s A Frame of Mind, which he listens to while falling asleep on planes.

Favorite Band Moments & Stage Nightmares

Marcus called their recent arena show with Slipknot in New Zealand a standout moment. The experience was surreal, not just because they opened for one of his biggest influences, but also because the crowd, surprisingly, was all in from start to finish. Josh kept it short and sweet. His highlight was the day Marcus joined the band. Nic recalled the emotional high of playing the Foothills Festival in Australia after the COVID-19 pandemic. After months of feeling lost, the energy of that show gave him a strong sense of direction again.

Technical issues made for one of Marcus’s most stressful nights during a massive European tour stop. With their backing tracks playing without a click on their in-ear monitors, the band pushed through an entire song essentially blind. At one point, Marcus had to entertain a 30,000-strong crowd in Spain for five minutes while they sorted out the details.

Josh shared a brutal moment from their Australian tour, when he unknowingly had COVID during their Sydney show. Sick to the bone, he somehow powered through the set, only to collapse in his hotel shower afterward.

For Nic, Resurrection Fest in Spain was a red flag, but it was the next show in the Netherlands where things went off the rails. His in-ear monitor pack failed on stage and never came back. With no audio cues, he couldn’t play in time. The band had to stop mid-set, all because of a tiny antenna that wasn’t seated properly.

Northlane in a Parallel Universe?

The genre-switch question sparked some fun alternate-reality answers. Marcus picked 2000s–2010s emo and post-hardcore, the music he grew up on. Josh imagined them going full acoustic folk-country, something miles away from their current sound. Nic stayed closer to home but visualized a heavy EDM club project, the kind you’d find in Blade or The Matrix.

If they could bring anyone into the studio, Marcus would go with Hayley Williams from Paramore. Nic had a completely different pick, which was Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit. Two wildly different choices, but both undeniably iconic in their own right.

Whether it’s sharing a stage with legends or powering through last-minute gear failures, Northlane keeps showing up. And clearly, they’re still having a good time doing it.
