Sam Lily, a singer and songwriter based out of Northern Rivers, Australia, is one of those people that you would describe as always grooving — from his skills with the guitars to his ability to write soft-natured yet emotive and engaging ballads, he’s been hard at work bringing his blend of acoustic, jazz and soul music; and on his latest single, “Soothe”, he presents a serenade to remember — keep reading for my thoughts!
Right off the bat, “Soothe” stays true to its name — it is a soothing, relaxing listen that would make you want to throw your head back — with influences from jazz, the sound is deep, mellow, and heartfelt beyond description; Sam’s vocal performance is the easy standout of this track. From his beautiful melodies to the layers upon layers with which he builds the story, there’s much to appreciate about his singing — and I’m glad to report that it manifests rather well on this track.

The rest of the ensemble is a collection of delightfully chosen instruments playing motifs that tug at your heartstrings — be it the gentle-mannered electric guitars in the background, or the slow, poised drumming, every bit of this ensemble comes together with a sense of grace and elegance unsurpassed. The banjos and synths add a good, warm carpet of atmosphere, and the rest of the song finds itself firmly grounded, yet soaring high with its emotive impact.
The mix and master on “Soothe” is just what the doctor ordered — with excellent separation between the instruments in the ensemble yet a sense of warmth and glue, this mix is welcoming from right the very second — and as you find yourself cocooned in its warmth, you’re presented with Sam’s melodious voice, which makes for a comforting, enjoyable listening experience.
All in all, “Soothe”, by Sam Lily: The kind of track that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy within — and does it with excellence. Take a listen to it here!
