Emmy Award–winning and Ivor Novello–nominated composer Michael J. McEvoy brings decades of screen and studio mastery to his latest release, Watching Waiting I Wonder, featuring Jane Fenton. Known for scoring Richard Linklater’s Me and Orson Welles and the Peabody Award–winning documentary The Jazz Ambassadors, McEvoy now turns his focus to contemporary neoclassical composition. This new track continues that direction, pairing his cinematic precision with intimate string performance to shape a refined, evocative world of sound.

Watching Waiting I Wonder opens like a slow shot of an absolutely magical castle you’ve only ever imagined. Immediately, the sound feels rich, deep, and royal. It moves with patience, allowing every note to expand and settle as you step further into its space. At first, it feels almost ceremonial; however, the warmth underneath keeps it from becoming distant.
It could easily soundtrack the opening of a historical royal fantasy anime. Or even Bridgerton; meanwhile, the whimsical surface carries a romantic undertone shaped by those deeper tones. The central cello steals the show. In fact, it holds the emotional core of the piece, guiding everything like waves shifting across water. As the melody, it lingers, drawing you to it.

Then, at the climax, the supporting instruments rise alongside the cello, reaching upward together. Consequently, the sound expands toward the sky without losing its elegance. Although the piece lasts only two and a half minutes, it leaves a distinct afterglow. By the end, Watching Waiting I Wonder, true to its title, settles you into wonder, imagination, and a quiet longing for something you rarely pause to notice in daily life.
