Matthias Lindner Crafts a Patient, Neoclassical Reverie in “Nenya”

German guitarist and composer Matthias Lindner crafts contemporary instrumental works that explore emotional nuance through the depth and tone of solo guitar. Having written more than 400 pieces, he continually draws inspiration from modern music, poetry, and visual art. His 2026 release Nenya, the opening track from his EP Three Duets—which also includes Canto and Fara—reflects his intimate, neoclassical approach and his emphasis on attentive, immersive listening.

Nenya opens with gentle guitar pluckings that fall like water slipping from your fingertips as you lift your hand from a still pool. The sound feels close, warm, and it settles softly into the room. At first, the notes move with restraint, allowing space to breathe between them. Then, midway through, the melody brightens and stretches upward before easing back down, as if testing the light and retreating into shade.

Rather than chase drama, Lindner lets the piece unfold slowly. Two guitars converse in low tones, tracing a reflective path that feels protective, almost hidden. The work draws from Tolkien’s myth of Nenya, the Ring of Water, and that quiet symbolism of guarding beauty seems to breathe through every phrase. Meanwhile, slight dissonances flicker through the calm, casting brief shadows across the surface. Because of that subtle friction, the music never turns passive.

Instead, small melodic shifts gently unsettle you just as comfort settles in, making you listen more closely. In its intent, the song makes you feel the air shift around each note, fingertips pressing and releasing the strings as if the performance is unfolding just a few feet away. Finally, Nenya leaves you standing at the edge of quiet water, watching the last ripple widen and disappear.
