South Florida-based band, KillBillies are back again with a fascinating collection of folk-country-rock tracks with their new album Back To Basics. With James Galiano on the Banjo, Ben Childs on the guitar and Sax, and Hector Diaz on the bass, the band serves up an excellent list.
With an energy dropping on us relentlessly, the folk strings in the breakout track Wetting the Beak, are a delight to dance and vibe to. We see subtle flavors of Arabic styles and sounds lacing the melodies. The earthy textures of folk music put on a hearty show of euphonies. With little to no percussion, the artists construct an enjoyable rhythm and tempo. There are moments of molten guitar lines that are profoundly immersive.
Law Abiding Man takes the energy up a notch. The melodies run like rolling hills. With exhilarating vocals spanning the range of folk panoramas, it is a total feel-good track. The song has the chirpy morning energy of a bright sunny day. And the vocals march with the beats to create a fun tempo that puts a skip in our step. Promised Dream is an illuminating track. The thin timbre of the finger-picked string melodies are very soothing. The artist add incredible dimensions to the song, using harmonies, resonant vocals, and layered melodies. And, as a common theme, the energy pop in the warm soundscape.
Mountain Sophistication has a base of country acoustics that is adorned by ecstatic banjo string patterns. In combination with the cozy vocals, the track is strangely alluring. With accents of nostalgia, adoration, and love, the song comes together like a dream. Even the folk expression of rock-style riffs in the bridge is delightful in its avant-garde presentation.
The next track, Fall On Your Sword starts with an American-style anthem before crumbling like butter cookies into dissolving lines of banjo melodies. Its speed and effortless flow is beyond impressive. Following it is like chasing a butterfly. The reassuring lyrics and gleaming vocals are the best thing to sink. Red Haired Boy / Raise a Ruckus / Cradle to the Grave follows with its exuberant display of jiving melodies and a carnival kind of fun. The triple musical vignette carries away into the night like a breeze, so be quick to catch it before you go to sleep. The band of beats and vocal arrangement have unaltered American themes to them. And the artist skillfully use them to transition between the three frames of the track.
Josh Song has a calmer soul and a smoother canvass. Broad vocal arcs and simple folk strings construct a castle of romance and love. Even the lyrics are so wholesome and hearty. Folk Like Us sports downplayed rock themes mixed into the rich country-folk fabric. The vocals swell with expanding passion and emotion. There’s something so simple and comforting about these songs. Its wholesome canvases sounds like home, of carefree fun, and childlike joy.
