Daniel Bohn – Divinity | Death of a Deity

Divinity is the latest single from St. Louis, Missouri progressive metal artist Daniel Bohn. Bohn has had some imaginative and creative releases with his stunning last album Void in the Mountain, and past single releases Arachnid’s Web and The Khan. Divinity is the first release of Bohn in 2022. Bohn’s music is influenced by prog metal giants like Between the Buried and Me, Porcupine Tree, The Ocean, and Obscura. His other primary songwriting influence is cinematic soundtracks and harmonies.

The song begins with a memorable synth riff over some intricate drumming in a polymeter. The tone of the main melodic synth line is based on chimy video game timbres. Soon the vocal growls enter over this sober background along with guitars to glorious effect. The riffs over the extremely well-articulated growls over a synth harmonic section are really a treat to listen to. The artwork by Karim Fetoum features a giant red phoenix/dragon-like creature and a knight with a sword facing it. The song is supposed to foresee the plot of Bohn’s next album and reveal a primary character. The protagonist of the track discovers the betrayal of his deity with a fatal loss of faith.

Long passages and chord progression are characteristic of video games soundtracks but also of bands like Opeth and Mastodon. Dorian from The Metal Krypt Studios has done some great work on mixing and mastering the track. Combining growling over the clean synths is like tasting a piece of icy cake. David Bohn is the producer of the track with guitars, drums, synths, and bass all written and performed by him. Bohn’s music has a cinematic narrative soundtrack nature which gives it a certain post-metal vibe. Divinity is a great progressive metal song with rounded growling and an epic musical canvass.
