Distant Sound – Oliver Mavilio | Night Drive

Imagine you’re in the driver’s seat of a fast, swept-back vintage convertible. It’s three in the morning, and you’re speeding down the highway with nothing but your thoughts to keep you company– and a nice old-fashioned radio playing a deeply introspective, melancholic tune. There is a certain ring to this night– amid lights that whizz past you at a speed that only seems to increase, as time seems to warp around you, taking you into its tight– yet comforting embrace. The song that would, is “Distant Sound”, by Oliver Mavilio. Here’s my take:

There is a certain set of strings in my heart this song managed to pull just right after only that one three-in-the-morning album by The Neighbourhood; or “I Am The Abyss” by Shylmagoghnar. As I gather quite the right words to try and weave a sentence, I find myself just closing my eyes, resting back, and enjoying the music, the ambiance, and all that it concocts in my head. This is a very… cathartic number; the kind of song that makes you reach deep into yourself, and let all of those hurtful things go– an inch, a drop at a time.

At this point, you can probably tell I’m one for this kind of feeling– guilty as charged. What can I say, the song evokes that side in me that I rarely get to express– even more rarely so beyond a forgotten page in a journal I don’t quite remember opening last.

The kind of atmosphere this song creates, is one that you have to listen to– two thumbs up. The way the elements build up, the way Oliver’s vocals form, well, a distant sound, sounds right about perfect here. Wholly appropriate for the mood– even inspires it, I suppose. The presentation remains consistent and coherent throughout; the songwriting is unique, with melancholic, dark undertones– with just the right sprinkle of energy to keep it from sounding like an endless wallow. Perfect, if you asked me. This song has this allure of mystery, the calling, if I may dare. And it’s the kind that we all need to listen to, from time to time– to witness an example of creative mastery at work.

“Distant Sound” by Oliver Mavilio gets my wholehearted, two-thumbs-up recommendation. Check out the song here:
