Steve McSmith – Can you feel your heartbeat | Feel-good Contemporary

Steve McSmith performs with the Unknown Band, a six-piece that’s been making waves in the contemporary music scene since 2019. Today, we’re hearing their track, “Can you feel your heartbeat” from the album 3/4/4 – a classic contemporary lovesong with an authentic sound. Under the band name – The McSmiths, the group writes about love, life and everything in between from a very optimistic, feel-good perspective. Featuring the emotive and raw sound of 90s folk and soft rock, The McSmiths share a heart-warming performance with this release.

Can you feel your heartbeat, so fast / Just like mine / Can you feel your handshake, a little / Just like mine / Don’t wait for the right time / That time never comes / Take my hand and I’ll take yours / And we could run”

The song begins with a soothing chorus that’s accompanied by a clean acoustic guitar in the starting. Steve’s smooth vocals here sound great over the simple drum rhythm and overall instrumentation as the track progresses. His lyrics focus on how there is never a right time to do things, and how we should take more chances in life. Halfway through “Can you feel your heartbeat”, the instrumentation becomes more piano-centric and that adds another layer of emotion to the already wholesome track. Steve’s performance sounds very natural here, and he expresses his story beautifully through clear lyricism.

What’s great about this track is how it’s not to dynamically heavy. It’s laid-back and has a chill feeling overall. Towards the end of the composition, a cool electric guitar supports the groove and the catchy melodies, creating a more full sound that is a pleasure to hear on the headphones. Loved the minimal production and mix of this one; a fantastic composition!
