badyot – Disposition | Ruminating Perseus

French triphop artist Robin Charbonnier aka badyot has released a fascinating EP titled Disposition. This is the second EP by badyot after his Parametre earlier in the year. Based in Paris, badyot has created a record which is focused on tight grooves and compelling synth production.

The EP cover art consists of 17th century French Baroque artist Pierre Puget’s sculpture of the Greek mythological couple Perseus and Andromeda, which is situated in the Louvre today. The story of Perseus and Andromeda is a forerunner to the dragon and princess trope. Much like a hero’s journey, Disposition takes us on a compelling musical tale.

Disposition commences with the first song, Disposition I, which consists of synths that play electronic sustained chords. Light and high pitched synth melody lines are sprinkled on these sustained chords setting the tone for what is to come. We get some fascinating electronic percussion which forms the basis of a track that will make you contemplate. Add to this are vocals that add intrigue to the song.

Disposition II, the second track, begins with rain sounds and spoken word samples. This template is then added with sustained synth chords creating a mysterious aura. Some groovy percussion is added to the mix and the song catches off. Mid way through the song we get some interesting effects elevating the track. There is some interesting synth and electronic production going on here. We also get a synth solo which sounds like a wailing voice, composed and emotive.

The third song we get is Disposition III. This is a brief track of about two minutes. It begins with a polyrhythmic and subtle riff. Sustained chords are then added to the mix. This paves the way for the creation of a beautiful aural soundscape. This song has a modern electro pop with ambient elements vibe in it. The clap percussion and the sonic canvass go along together astoundingly well. Stunning work by badyot!

The record concludes with the fourth and final track, Disposition IV. There is a change in mood for the song with an industrial sound. The percussion and beats are heavy with some tight snares and kicks. We also get some interesting chordal and harmonic arrangements. These create a murky and dark sound. Still seeped in an electronic ambient template. The song changed mood and sound halfway. The chords and primary melody transform into a joyous one with a positive and reaffirming vibe. This gives a club aura with a solid beat and heavenly synths. In the final leg of the track, the sounds move back to the dark sound, then fading away. A captivating track with both the light and dark moods. Great way to end the EP!

Traveling the contours of compelling electronica and downtempo triphop, badyot spins a record that creates a moody aura with tight grooves. Disposition consists of four tracks and the record runs for about eighteen minutes. In such a short period of time, badyot much like Puget is able to sculpt a stunning musical sculpture of fascinating triphop music.
