Glenarvon – Idle Thrashing | Diamond Coal Rock Textures

New York alternative rock musician Derek Brown has a fiery new alternative rock LP titled Idle Thrashing as part of his project Glenarvon. Hailing from Daytona Beach, Florida, Glenarvon has made album Idle Thrashing consciously, in tribute, to the style of alternative rock bands such as Nirvana, Weezer, Soundgarden, and Hole. In his own words this is the album he wanted to make as a teen listening to these bands.

Idle Thrashing begins with I’m In The Same Spot Again. We get a song combining the feel of Nirvana with some optimistic overtones. A steady groove and tight feel push this number to the next level, which will keep you listening. With the second track Don’t Ask For Too Much, Dear, we get a raw alternative rock song reminding us of some Deftones with pop overtones. This is another number with the right rhythm and melody on board with the right catchy chorus.

The third song Roche (Bad Blood) starts with a gritty bassline. We get a groovy vocal hook in the verses as we proceed into the catchy chorus. There are compelling synths and organ sounds with impeccable vocal harmonies. On the fourth number I Don’t Believe In Man, the song begins with an almost modern indie rock feel and groove. We get a change in mood on Idle Thrashing here. I Wanna Give You My Love continues the indie and rock and rock feel. The grunge guitars combined with the dancy and groovy feel is something to look out for in this sweet number. Foot tapping is inevitable on this song.

Not As The Way Things Are begins with clean rhythm guitars which are soon layered with bass and more guitars. A reflective rock number that catches energy with its chorus and has some neat synth parts in the second half. The three songs on record are Rarely In A Moment, Touch Her Again, Traveling Man (Oh, No, It’s Me Again). These song on the record give a tasty modern alternative rock album. Rooted in the past, thriving in the present. Idle Thrashing concludes Ephemera is the song on the album commencing with a stunning riff. Do not miss the tasty guitar solo on this song. It is reminiscent of the style of Mike McCready from Pearl Jam, with a bluesy phrasing in an alternative rock ballad setting.

The guitars are true alternative rock guitars. In the sense that they’re distorted with the right amount of fuzz and noise in the tone. This is what gives it the raw feel unlike the heavily polished rhythm guitars of modern heavy rock. As an earnest tribute to his musical DNA, Idle Thrashing succeeds while also pushing his voice as a musical artist further. We also get to hear traces of bands such as Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins, Alter Bridge, etc. on this record. Idle Thrashing is super recommended for anyone who likes the sound of alternative rock of the 90s and 2000s with a fresh voice.
