Sheffield, UK-based and Catalan by birth Hugh Ruiz who released music as Ruiz! is a fun electropop artist. His latest release Falling is a notable DIY production that will get you grooving. The song has been released on the Only Fruit Recordings label. Falling is his second release this year after 5 Seconds, which had made it to the BBC Introducing Mixtape
Ruiz has had a musical career spanning over 30 years. While he is a classically trained pianist and cellist, the bass is his rock choice of weapon. He has been bassist to several bands including Bolster, A.F.I.D., and The Better Ford Clinic. His work with Jim Muir Slideshow received critical acclaim. Being a touring musician and educationist the corona lockdown lead him to the path of the solo artist. The single artwork has a sepia-toned picture of a couple with literal radio heads, that is, vintage radios in place of heads.
The track begins with Ruiz’s choral harmonized vocals and electronic hi-hats in a polymeter. Soon we ease into the song with a pulsating feel. The song is anchored around the infectious synth bassline and chiming keys chordal elements. The electronic beats fit well with the 80s-style production. We also hear some processed robotic vocals and interesting post-punk and techno tones.
Ruiz expresses well through his songwriting. Lyrically, the song deals with fate and actively taking control of your life. Ruiz sings acknowledges the human tendency to not be able to see plans through but signifies the importance of recognizing one’s progress. Falling is a catchy new wave indie song with post-punk aesthetics that one would truly enjoy!
