Maya Yenn – How Much Sadness Can You Swallow? | Time bomb, ticking

How Much Sadness Can You Swallow from Maya Yenn is an alt-pop track exploring the dark theme of unrelenting acceptance of trauma – until one breaks. The song is a masterful combination of rich lyrics that invoke imagery, and beats that are hauntingly set to match the same.

Independent producer, singer, and songwriter Maya Yenn hails from London, more specifically from rural Staffordshire. She credits contemporary RnB musicians like FKA Twigs and James Blake, as well as pop-rock beatmakers like Glass Animals Jungle for influencing her style.

How Much Sadness Can You Swallow is Maya Yenn’s latest track. The song recounts the story of an ill-fated woman. She is is being chased and tortured by the king and his powerful allies. Further, it seems that she has been exploited, and she knows they only mean her harm. While this state is confounding and she seems to be low on the will to live, she shows a spark. She says, there is only so much sadness and trauma to swallow, after which you would get a stomach ache. And this seems like her act of resistance – knowing that the quiet acceptance will soon make her burst.

Additionally, the music on the song is opulent with many layers. The song features two verses accompanied with soft beats, and each is followed by the chorus that mostly comprises the complex and nuanced beats.
