The White Russian released ‘Cancer Knee’ and it’s folk-ish, punk-ish, new wave-ish, ballad-ish…..All kinds of ‘ish’ really, except in one respect. It’s a glorious single. No ‘ish’. No hesitation is saying how much I’ve played it and shall continue to keep playing it.
The White Russian is a musical ensemble based around the work of singer songwriter Joseph Sol Giffard Tutt. ‘Cancer knee’ seems to be their debut release. I already can’t wait for more gems like this from The White Russian.
“I swear you’ll find it all”
– The White Russian
In this particular recording it is evident that there is no attempt at any ping pong gimmickry, but that the recording actually reproduces with complete fidelity and realism – the true sound of an orchestra as they sound in a concert hall – right in your living room. The result is this exciting and quite remarkable recording which presents the rich fabric of an orchestra. All without any artificial reverberation with every instrument in proper spatial arrangement not only directionally, but also in depth.
‘Cancer Knee’ comes as a full package with a quirky video. The song is filled with surrealistic notions and elegant organic music that you can listen to in almost any setting . The horns are so brilliantly introduced, sending shivers down the listeners spine and creates an image of a picturesque autumnal meadow. Giffard has a very soothing voice that goes perfectly with his choice of instruments and impeccable arrangement.
What really stands out in this ballad is the creative use of ambient sounds from nature. You cant help but notice the occasional bird chirping or breeze blowing. Overall ‘Cancer Knee’ seems to do the job of a catalyst; catalysing your present emotional state.
