Painted Flowers are back to injecting us with Rock N Roll with their newest single, Late Night Special. The six piece rock n roll band from Johannesburg, South Africa is comprised of Elio Moavero (Lead Vocals, harmonica), Anika Reinecke (Keys and back up vocal), Joshua Rogers (Lead guitar), Jonny Smith (Bass and back up vocals), Valentino Moavero (drums) and Ricky Chasumba (Guitar and back up vocals).
Painted Flowers released their first single at the end of 2020 and have had a steady stream of releases since, including four music videos, two more singles and a debut EP called Walk It Loose. Clearly the band doesn’t show any signs of slowing down, and we are all here for it!
Late Night Special is a funky, unplugged sort of rock song that will have you dancing immediately. With the most interesting tonality, the vocals on this track are a throwback to the 70s and the 80s and are very inviting. The backup vocals and the harmonies are such a perfect sing along mix. What really sets the mood of the song is the repeating, funky guitar riff that is accompanied by what sounds like synth/keyboard sound. There is a resounding quality to the song, and they even have a bridge that you can clap and sing along to.
Painted Flowers seem so seamlessly and effortlessly funky that it would take me a good guessing game to figure out that they aren’t one of the greats from the 70s. The perfect combination of funk, nostalgia and some really cool production, Painted Flowers reminds me of The Rolling Stones, The Velvet Underground and The Strokes.
Painted Flowers are a delight to listen to and Late Night Special is definitely going on my playlist!
