Lone Stag – Don’t Lie | Sweet Comfort

Lone Stag is the kind of sweet musician you could comfortably take home to meet your folks, safe in the knowledge that your imminent engagement would get their full endorsement.

The new single ‘Don’t Lie’ is a short but sweet introduction to the talents of Scottish singer/songwriter and guitarist. Lone Stag, seemingly has an old head on a pair of young shoulders. His early years were spent travelling from place to place. Always a stranger in a strange land, he was originally a guitarist happiest playing rock covers to crowds of drunken ex-pats. An introduction to the work of songwriter Jason Molina encouraged Lone Stag to develop his own material.

Lone Stag’s intricate nylon-strung fingerpicked guitar sound has expanded into more complex arrangements with the addition of a rhythm section, piano, an unexpected dash of a ukulele and some very pleasing vocal harmonies. An atmospheric slow piano ballad colored by strings, ‘Don’t Lie’ is a stream of consciousness musing on mortality.

The jangly shimmer of wonderful melodies that wisp and whisper while rising and falling to embellish a single that is rich and warm. There’s a kind of soft psychedelia that’s a base for this song. Lone Stag’s single sits firmly within the sound that drifted out from that northern peninsula, crafted and matured through the years to create a confluence of the Beatles and Radiohead.

Nevertheless, Lone Stag has made a single that is exquisitely played, sincerely felt and sonically beautiful.  He has made the kind of record that thousands of singer-songwriters dream of making.  A single that is almost too good to be true.
