Diamonds from Kid Fiction is a dizzying electronica composition. It is super futuristic and creates a distorted soundscape that completely overtakers the listeners’ senses. I guess this is my first tiff with IDM, and lucky for me — it has me intrigued. The song brings together constantly displacing sound-waves, and finds a peaceful rhythm in their bosom. As I acquainted myself with more of the genre, and with Kid Fiction’s music, I drew some conclusions about the track. Diamonds is fast, upbeat, and encourages you to sway and move around. However, that’s only the surface.
The lyrics detail a dystopian and sorrowful tale. Kid Fiction talks of being lost, destiny showing him a jarring future, and the likely loss of love for good. This is the significant contributor to that futuristic sensation I mentioned earlier. On the contrary, Kid Fiction takes control — he fights the current and strives to stand for more.
Diamonds is a very interesting track: its sonic formation is unlike usual present day music. A vocalist and producer, Sydney-based musician Kid Fiction has built himself a reputation for music just like this. In his own words, his influences range from ‘Soulful Dub and RnB, to Footwork, Future Beats and Warp-styled IDM.’ Moreover, his lyrics explore themes like crisis, transition, and the rebirth after. In that way, he makes surreal music that is relevant and relatable. Wouldn’t you call that fiction, now? His upcoming EP is close to release, coming out on December 10, so there’s a lot to look forward to!
