The Parlophonics – A Day In The Life | 70s-Reminiscent Alt-Rock

If you miss the sounds of 70s Brit-rock, then this next band is definitely one you should check out! The Parlophonics (Robert Horvath, Fernando Perdomo and Hugh Macdonald), released their debut album in August this year. It comprises ten excellent power pop/alternative rock tracks that were written, recorded, and produced, all through online collaboration – how crazy is that?! The members say that distance contributed to the creation and growth of the band’s signature sound, so get ready for a gripping listening experience!

A Day In The Life Album Tracklist

The album opens with the title track, A Day In The Life, driven by hopeful guitar progressions and wailing riffs. Through his emotive vocal delivery, singer Robert Horvath reminds his listeners how important it is to be optimistic, and that every day is a gift. – “A day in the life / this is all we have / wasting our time / we shall wake up instead / we’ve been losing the plan / braving those storms / yes, together we can, oh we can.”

These Days is a feel-good track that fits the “beach song” vibe quite well! Playful melodies over a lively rhythm section make this a very fun listen. I really liked the vocal tune on this one!

With rich and wide harmonies, Staring at the Sun seems to be composed in the style of The Beatles. The track is at its core, a love song with a lot of emotion. Gotta love how the bass and drums on this one, they support the guitars excellently!

Well, I felt the previous track to be very Beatles-esque, but track four – Feel The Light, makes you feel their vibe right from the intro. With colourful chords and two-part harmonies, The Parlophonics have shared a beautifully composed piece that’s filled with sentiment and a lot of energy.

Higher Ground has a very country sound, coming mainly from the guitars. Bluesy guitar riffs accompany the catchy vocal hook well, you’ll have a hard time getting this one out of your head! – “I am standing on a higher ground / And I don’t need anybody around / I’m taking whatever I need / I don’t care where it’s going to lead.”

Track six, More Than Words, is one of those songs that would be fitting for a rom-com film soundtrack. It’s slow tempo and simplistic composition make it easy on the ears. I’m addition, it has an excellent guitar lead that adds to the intimate feel of the song.

God Speed Helena features a slightly different sound as compared to the previous tracks, mainly because of the vocals. Rich harmonies, upbeat drums and a beautiful acoustic guitar add to the liveliness of this song, creating a space that’s both fresh and familiar.

With similar wailing guitars, Make It Right sounds like the continuation of the album’s intro song. It has a very similar tone overall, though the track has a nostalgic vibe. A very catchy chorus makes this a perfect track to have on repeat! – “I wanna make it right this time, and love you more than I have, and love you more than I have…”

Paper Smile was released as a single prior to the album, and I must say, it was a fantastic choice. This track full captures the essence of the album – It’s not just loud guitars and infectious melodies spread out over ten songs; The Parlophonics have a certain way of telling their stories through skilful songwriting and creative compositions and that’s what makes their music appealing to a wide audience.

The album ends on an optimistic note, with Be Alright. Another love song with compassionate vocals; really liked the simple melodies and heartfelt lyrics on this track. –“I want you to know it’s alright / It’s okay if you want me to stay / And I feel what you feel cause I can see all the things that you see.”

Summary

It’s simply astonishing how these three musicians managed to release a masterful ten-track album without even meeting each other. I guess the pandemic was more of a gift in disguise for The Parlophonics, rather than a curse, and they’ve made one banger of an album! ‘A Day In The Life’ features a lot of familiar pop/rock elements from the last few decades and the band’s modern touch on the genres make the songs a pleasure to listen to. I hope someday, the three artists get to jam together in the same room and create more amazing music for their fans!
