Voodoo Bloo – Skin | Progressively Powerful

Voodoo Bloo is a California-based powerful indie rock-driven project, led by Rory McDonald. The music is extremely and passionately in your face. Drawing influence from artists like Arctic Monkeys, Deftones, System of a Down and Car Seat Headrest, McDonald has created an amalgamation of varied and unique sounds. It is very passionately emotional and conceptually driven.

Skin is a prime example of this. The track has this neo-prog rock feeling to it, I just can’t explain it any other way. The Voodoo Bloo sound is so unique, yet sounds exactly like all their influential bands in one. The guitar work is quite reminiscent of System of a Down, while the synth is more like Arctic Monkeys. However, McDonald’s vocals sound very much like Chino Morena from Deftones. Voodoo Bloo have the ability to get you headbanging while also just grooving. McDonald shows an intricate understanding of his various tones. The drums go so hard that you can feel the explosion as they rip incredibly at the end of the track. The synth acts as this percussive instrument that is not out of the ordinary with the alternative scene from the 90s.

I can honestly tell you that the second I heard this track, I could not stop moving till it ended. There’s such a King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard vibe going on throughout the track. It takes unusual paths, but it gets the job done well.
