Strange and the Familiars – Strange World | Dark

Strange and the Familiars is a US-based band that creates deep, dark soundscapes. Their music is laced with wonder and the void of the unknown. They operate on both the liminal as well as subliminal levels. Citing that on the surface,  everything is as it appears to be, but when you look closer you’ll see the strange and unusual have been gathering, people who sometimes see the world as it truly is, drawn together by forces unseen.

Strange World starts with this dark, gritty bassline reminiscent of some early Frank Zappa work. The guitar creates a brilliant counter-melody that brings in the tinny balance. The vocals remind me of Geddy Lee from Rush but are more refined. This dark space feels almost like we’ve gone into the other world that many musicians before have tapped into. We know you’re scared of the dark places – seems to be the line around which all of this revolves. There’s something so intriguing about what’s unknown. It’s probably the stimulation that you get from the anxiety. The track kind of reminds me of Modest Mouse’s The Whale Song with the gritty texture. Strange and the Familiars seem to take you to unfamiliar places in order to create something more familiar

I can’t imagine how creative Strange and the Familiars have been to create such a brilliant track. They’ve done such a great job in creating an unseemingly safe environment to explore the unknown. Like I’ve said before, they operate on the liminal as well as subliminal levels. It works like a meta description of itself.
