Elias James is a Canadian singer-songwriter. Based out in Toronto, Elias writes mellifluous music with heartfelt lyrics. His country, folk, blues style is uniquely refreshing. However, I am inclined to say that his music sounds a lot like Florida Georgia Line and Thomas Rhett. Elias’ multi-instrumentalism adds so much character to his music, engaging his listeners in various voicing.
Whoever Got You is a track that Elias James has collaborated with T.J. Simpson and Rich Cloke (Elias’ usual songwriting partner). The track is a groovy blues track that follows someone who has just been informed that his ex has gotten engaged. The lyrics are poetic, raw, and chock-full of emotion. Elias James has stated that he’s always resonated with the One The Got Away story, although not having experienced it himself. This would be the premise for him writing a track based on the story.
I find that Elias James has a brilliant songwriting ability, that is only matched by his ability to perform such magnificent music. The drums and guitar work just keeps the whole song going, while Elias’ husky, yet oddly clean vocals cut through the mix so sweetly. The production work on the track is truly admirable, specifically the added synth elements that just linger in the background but add a certain sprinkle to the overall melancholic undertone.
