Blues music is the infidelity of pain and romance. Traditionally, one of the main goals of the genre has been to get under one’s skin and offer a sense of sympathetic cradle in the pain. Alternative indie-inspired Blues-rock group Mums Favourite have managed to flirt with these conventions of the genres, creating a uniquely attractive discography in the process.
After their 2020 release Eye Contact and 2021 release Jewellery Box, Mums Favourite is back with their latest 2021 single Primrose that lucidly captures the essence of early blues records, reminding the listener of the originators of the genre. The mellifluous and blues-infused vocals of the band is an exemplary introduction to the track. The emotional magnitude of the band’s vocalist expressed through the empathetic vocal performance is a fitting complement to the seasoned musicianship of the track.
The band seems to be setting a groove that focuses on paying homage to bands such as Led Zeppelin, Alexandra Savior, AM era-Arctic Monkeys and EYCTE era-The Last Shadow Puppets. The track has elements of Blues, Rock and Indie accompanied by a pulsating bass which allows the musicianship to ascent into a sonic staircase, letting them crest and trough across the number. Emotions at high, riddled with an immersive tenor vocal performance and a near post-Britpop groove, Mums favourite is one of the most promising groups coming out of the woodwork.
